OUR VOLUNTEERS ROCK!!

As a volunteer-led organization with no full-time staff literally, everything CSNM does is dependent on the generosity of our volunteers. Each year, hundreds of people volunteer their time to support our efforts and our corps of volunteers continues to grow. The majority of our volunteers were clients themselves, providing built-in support and guidance (peer to peer) for our participants in each program.

“In addition to our program volunteers, insurance experts along with many attorneys and financial experts volunteered to help us deliver our LIPA program.”

Our Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors makes invaluable contributions to CSNM’s activities, providing everything from organizational oversight, to technical expertise, to day-to-day support for program development and implementation activities. Our Board Members include:

Relationships with New Mexico’s Oncology Community

From its inception, Cancer Services of New Mexico has been committed to working closely with other cancer services providers throughout New Mexico to ensure coordination and avoid duplication of effort. We are delighted by the tremendous support we receive from New Mexico’s oncology community, and continue to be impressed by the remarkable collaborations we have developed with a wide range of partnering organizations.

Our Medical Advisory Board includes leading physicians from around the state who provide input on our program offerings, participate in our programs, and encourage their patients to participate. Current members include:

  • William Adler, MD – Memorial Medical Center
  • Jose Avitia, MD – New Mexico Cancer Center
  • Gregg Franklin, MD, PhD – New Mexico Cancer Center
  • Ramesh Gopal, MD, PhD – MD Anderson Cancer Center at Presbyterian
  • Fei Gu, MD – New Mexico Cancer Care Associates
  • Carolyn Muller, MD – UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • Devon Neale, MD- UNM Dept. of Internal Medicine
  • Dulcinea Quintana, MD- UNM Dept. of Internal Medicine
  • Leah F. Roberts, MD- New Mexico Dept. of Health
  • Lorraine Sanchez, MD – Hematology-Oncology Associates
  • Thomas Schroeder, MD – UNM Department of Radiation Oncology
  • Linda Ann Smith, MD – Private Practice Breast Surgeon
  • Amanda Story, MD – Radiation Oncology Associates
  • Amy Tarnower, MD – UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center

We also continue to work closely with other cancer services organizations around the state to coordinate programs and avoid duplication of effort. We are active members of the New Mexico Cancer Council, the statewide coalition of public and private partners which coordinates the development, implementation, and evaluation of the NM Cancer Plan. This involvement ensures that our programs continue to support the NM Cancer Plan and supplement or complement other organization’s efforts.

Our Dedicated Staff

We are a program-driven organization, with extremely low overhead costs (e.g., no physical office, no full-time staff). Unlike most non-profit organizations, we do not have a paid Executive Director. Nearly all of our revenue goes directly into providing services to New Mexicans touched by cancer.

Along with our volunteers, our team includes several outstanding part-time employees and contractors who make our work possible. Janet Quintana-Cook is our Family Cancer Retreat Program Manager; Sonya Pierce is our LIPA Program Manager;  our Program Coordinator, Shirelle Quintana, manages the speakers and materials for our Family Cancer Retreats and coordinates many of our other program activities; and Rachelle Luna handles our bookkeeping.

Cancer Services of New Mexico Foundation

In 2005, we launched the Cancer Services of New Mexico Foundation, an affiliated non-profit organization that raises and invests funds to support the work of Cancer Services of New Mexico.  A portion of the Foundation’s assets are transferred to Cancer Services of New Mexico each year, providing us with critical funding to deliver our programs.

Current Cancer Services of New Mexico Foundation board members include:

  • President – Carmel Sanchez-Busby – Wells Fargo
  • Secretary – Blaire Larson – RBL Products, LLC/CSNM Founder & Past-President
  • Treasurer – Milo Lish, CPA – My Growth Place
  • Director – Richard Larsen, MD, PhD – UNM Health Sciences Center /CSNM Founder & CSNM Foundation Past President
  • Director – Laurie Roach – PNM Resources Foundation
