Family Cancer Resource Bags

Being diagnosed with cancer can feel incredibly overwhelming, especially for parents with children at home. Naturally, our first instinct as parents is to shield our children from any pain or difficulty. However, navigating this challenge positively can show our children resilience and strength. How can we best support and reassure our children during this time?

Cancer Services of New Mexico introduced the Family Cancer Resource Bag program to support families navigating cancer together. This program was designed with New Mexican parents coping with cancer and their children in mind, providing them with tools and information to make this journey easier. Each kit includes advice on how to talk to children about cancer, engaging books for families to read together, and resources tailored for kids aged 4-12 and teenagers. We collaborate with oncology clinics and other cancer service providers throughout New Mexico to ensure these bags reach families statewide.

The Family Cancer Resource Bag

The American Cancer Society, Cancer Family Care, and The Gathering Place granted permission to reprint their materials.  Local author and cancer survivor, Eleanor Schick, graciously donated copies of her book "When Mama Wore a Hat" to include in each bag.
