Family Cancer Resource Bags

Being diagnosed with cancer is an overwhelming experience for anyone. It is particularly challenging for those who have children living at home. As a parent, our first instinct is to protect our children from pain; yet, how can we protect them from this?

Cancer Services of New Mexico created the Family Cancer Resource Bag program to help families navigate this difficult process. The program was designed to provide New Mexican parents coping with cancer and their loved ones with some tools and information that can assist them during this challenging time. The kits contain suggestions for talking with children about cancer, books for families to read together, and materials targeted specifically at children aged 4-12 and teenagers. Oncology clinics and other cancer services providers throughout New Mexico assist us in distributing the bags throughout the state.

The American Cancer Society, Cancer Family Care, and The Gathering Place have granted us permission to reprint their materials.  Local author and cancer survivor, Eleanor Schick, graciously donated copies of her book “When Mama Wore a Hat” to include in each bag.

How can my family get one?
